Introduction
We are in the process of writing a series of courses that you can take online through the MARET Premium Services website. Each of these courses will give you significant and practical education at the college level (although you will not receive actual college credit for the courses).
Current Courses under Construction
There are seven courses currently under construction. That number will grow as time goes on and needs evolve. Courses will be posted to the Premium website in the order that they appear below. The courses currently under construction are as follows.
Course #1 -- Advanced Structured MARET Education
This course is designed to take the MARET Counseling and Assessment Software owner through every major facet of the software package. In this course, the user will understand each section of the software and will learn to accurately and completely use that section of the software in their counseling experience.
When the MARET Counseling and Assessment Software owner completes the first course - Advanced Structured MARET Education - the owner will receive a Certificate of Completion from MARET acknowledging that they have completed the comprehensive education associated with the use of the MARET Counseling and Assessment Software. In order to receive this Certificate of Completion the owner will need to provide us with proof of their expertise using MARET. That "proof" will come in the form of a substantial online test that exhibits the owner's mastery of the MARET Counseling and Assessment Software package.
Course #2 -- Mastery of Relationship Tools in MARET
The MARET Counseling and Assessment Software package includes two Assessments related to relationships. Those Assessments are the Marriage Inventory and the Premarriage Inventory.
Included in the Assessment process, there are a number of other important tools that can be gainfully employed to assist in the process of counseling marital and premarital relationships. Those tools include a complete personalized and customized Workbook for each individual and a comprehensive Treatment Planner designed to lead the therapist or pastor through the relationship counseling process.
Both of those additional tools will be mastered in this course. This will give the counselor substantial tools to use in the counseling of any relationship whether that relationship is a troubled marriage or a premarital counseling situation.
Course #3 -- Understanding and Treating Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the leading causes of mental illness in our society. Through this course the user will learn what anxiety is, how it manifests itself by technical DSM-IV-TR definitions, and what measures can be taken to effectively reduce anxiety. The owner of the MARET Counseling and Assessment Software package will also understand the dangers of uncontrolled anxiety, including its potential to be involved with suicide, suicidal attempts, and para-suicidal ideations.
Examination of QuikTest results at an advanced level will be addressed to some degree (although complete education related to advanced QuikTest results is reserved for its own course).
Course #4 -- Understanding and Treating Major Depression and Dysthymia
Like anxiety, Major Depression and its "cousin" Dysthymia, are rated among the most frequent of all Mood Disorders experienced by individuals in our society.
In this course, the MARET user will learn to define both Major Depression and Dysthymia. They will learn to understand the difference and similarities between the two. They will learn techniques to deal with both Major Depression and Dysthymia. Finally, the user will learn when an individual needs professional help. In regards to that aspect of our training, the user will learn to determine what level of professional help the individual might need.
A final aspect of the course will lead the user to create a comprehensive support and referral network for individuals suffering from all types of disorders including both depressive issues and anxiety issues.
Course #5 -- Understanding and Treating Other Mood Disorders
Major Depression and Dysthymia are both classified in the DSM-IV-TR as Mood Disorders. While they are the most frequently experienced Mood Disorders, there are other Mood Disorders listed in the DSM-IV-TR that are important for the MARET owner to understand. While the MARET owner may not feel entirely competent to counsel those Disorders without additional education, it is at least important that they are able to identify those Disorders and to find appropriate help for individuals suffering from those Disorders.
Each of the Mood Disorders listed in the DSM-IV-TR will be discussed and examined comprehensively.
Course #6 -- Advanced QuikTest Analysis
QuikTest was the first Assessment created by MARET. It remains among the most-used of all of our Assessments. While it only contains three scales, those three scales used with the knowledge of the full potential interpretation of those scales can provide the pastor, counselor or therapist with a wealth of information. This is especially true when the Assessment has been given to an individual five or more times.
Once QuikTest has been administered five or more times to the same person, a whole new "world" of interpretation and analysis opens up. This includes additional scales and graphs that help the counselor to determine the extent, longevity and severity of anxiety, depression and the potential for self-harm.
In this course, the MARET owner will learn how to interpret all of the scales included in the expanded version of QuikTest's results. Special focus will be placed on the potential for self-harm that is often "hidden" in prolonged anxiety and depression elevations. Having already obtained counseling skills to deal with both anxiety and depression issues, this course will provide a wealth of information that can be practically applied in real-life counseling situations.
Course #7 -- Mastery of the Personality Style and Disorder Assessment
The Personality Style and Disorder Assessment was a by-product of my doctoral work. It assesses personality traits associated with all ten of the Personality Disorders listed in the DSM-IV-TR. The Assessment has been expanded to include not only technical Personality Disorder as defined by the DSM-IV-TR, but it also includes personality style associated with each of the ten personalities.
Through this course the MARET owner will learn to interpret each of the ten personality styles. The owner will learn to determine if disorder exists and how the personality style and disorder affects the individual personally and interpersonally. This is a great addition to the previously discussed relationship tools.
The Workbook sheets that are produced as part of this Assessment will be discussed extensively. The MARET owner will learn how to use those Workbooks effectively in therapy.
How the Education Program Works
The educational courses provided on the MARET Premium Services website are included in the yearly cost of the membership. MARET Premium Services subscribers do not need to pay anything extra to go through the educational courses provided. They are provided as part of the educational services associated with Premium Membership.
However, the MARET Premium Services Member may choose to obtain a Certificate of Completion for each course that they take. There is an additional charge when a Member chooses to obtain a Certificate of Completion. That Certificate recognizes that the individual has completed the course successfully through an interactive testing process. The user may choose to use this Certificate of Completion as a Continuing Education Unit, if his or her denomination will accept the Certificate as such.
[MARET Premium Services Members must recognize that the Certificates of Completion are not educational degrees nor are they recognized as educational credits at any certified educational institution. Since the Certificates are only given to individuals who have demonstrated significant mastery of course content, the Certificates are of value to demonstrate some mastery of course subject content. The conscientious counselor, therefore, will desire the Certificate as a means of demonstrating their own understanding and competence associated with course content.]
